Music is an extremely important subject for all children to learn and can lead to better brain development, increases in human connection, and even stress relief. As music is removed from schools, children will no longer receive these benefits unless they enroll in private lessons, which is much too expensive for some families to afford.

Contributing to the cause.

When I was approached in by Takeoff Terminal Studios in Austin and asked to create a video for this program I immediately said yes. What inspired me about the program, was what it was doing. The Idea Public School’s music program approach to music was unique. Not only were they offering traditional music education, but they were also doing music production and music videos.

The process

The first steps involved me meeting with Takeoff Terminal Studios was to discuss the song the kids were producing, when it would be ready and when they were going to record. Luckily the kids were going to be recording the song in the studio, which gave me the opportunity to get some studio footage. During the recording session, I was also able to interview a few of the people involved in the program on camera. I ended up recording enough material to create a making-of the video and an official music video.

The outcome

At the end of the process, we created something special. The kids got a taste of the process involved in creating a song, recording it, and shooting a music video. My hope is that programs like these continue in schools, they are important and they allow kids to explore other skills and possible talents they probably didn’t know they have.
